A standard of excellence..

Triangle Speakers seeks to reach gay, lesbian, bisexual, Transgendered and questioning youth to decrease their isolation, and to reach other youth and audience members to increase their sensitivity. In order to do so, Triangle Speakers provides speakers to classroom students in grades K-12, most of whom are minors. In this context, Triangle Speakers has adopted the following Standards of Conduct for all those affiliated with our organization.

An "affiliate" of Triangle Speakers is any individual who: participates in a speaking engagement under the sponsorship of our organization. Each affiliate will be asked for an express commitment to adhere to our Standards of Conduct.

No adult affiliated with Triangle Speakers shall have a sexual relationship with a minor (person under 18) or secondary school student met through our speaking engagements.

If approached by a student met through a speaking engagement for information or support, the affiliate of Triangle Speakers will attempt to include another adult in any meeting, provide appropriate information and support, and refer the student to appropriate community resources (such as support groups, gay-straight alliances, or  counseling, such as those listed on a resources sheet provided for any person after each panel presentation). At all times, the affiliate will be cognizant that one-on-one contact with a student after a speaking engagement may put the student, the speaker and the Triangle Speakers organization at risk due to widely held perceptions of GLBT people.

Speaking engagements are not a place to make social contacts. It is not acceptable to make social plans at speaking functions, or to flirt or make suggestive comments to our audience. It is unacceptable to suggest, imply or reveal that any individual in the group we are addressing may be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or Transgendered.
